HGTV’s Design Star, Season 7, has started.
The designers’ goal was to create something that would photograph well so it could appear in HGTV’s magazine. This is NOT the winning entry but I thought would make an excellent learning example for “Spot the Kitchen Errors”.

Please keep in mind, these are budding designers, and not specialists in kitchen design. They were also working within the tight timeframes of television.
Nevertheless, the designers themselves may actually read this and I’d like us to remain respectful (not that you wouldn’t anyway – I know you. This is for any new folks who might think this is something other than a learning tool.)
Ignore color for now: what might be helpful is to perhaps point out not only what’s wrong with the function and why this wouldn’t work for a busy family but what you would propose instead. Your solutions will be beneficial to others.
I spot at least 2 dangerous layout areas (well, really one which is creating the two others). What else can you spot?
The winning kitchen has a few technical errors, such as not building the cabinet and paneling forward to hide the exposed sides of the refrigerator but this doesn’t affect layout. (It’s actually a really good visual to show how deep refrigerators have become and what happens with stock cabinetry.)
In fact, in terms of layout and technical storage, the kitchen as a functional layout works. Here it is for those who wonder:
